🇪🇪 Estonia digital nomad visa: requirements

Estonia pioneered the formal digital-nomad visa and runs a smooth, digital-first process: the state fee is €120 and decisions usually land inside 30 days. The headline filter is money: its income threshold is one of the highest in Europe, which keeps the applicant pool smaller.

Income requirement
You need to show roughly €4,500 per month. A minimum of €4,500 a month, evidenced over the six months immediately before you apply, and it has to be a consistent pattern rather than one strong month. Whether that is gross or net is genuinely contested: Estonia's own e-Residency portal states “€4,500 net/monthly”, while most commercial guides call it gross. Those two readings are over a thousand euros of real income apart, so we hold it to the net reading, the one that cannot get you refused, and we would confirm it with the Police and Border Guard Board ([email protected]) before committing to anything. You will also still find guides quoting €3,504: that is the older figure, roughly €1,000 too low for a 2026 application.

Health insurance
Health insurance valid in Estonia (and the Schengen area) for the full duration of stay. This is the step that rejects the most applications, so it's worth getting right.

Tax
Long stays can create Estonian tax residency; Estonia's e-Residency is separate and does not grant the right to live there.
How long it lasts
Up to 1 year (Type D long-stay). It is mainly a temporary route rather than a path to permanent residency.
