🇪🇪 Estonia digital nomad visa: requirements
Last checked: September 2026 · official government source
Estonia pioneered the formal digital-nomad visa and runs a smooth, digital-first process — the state fee is €120 and decisions usually land inside 30 days. The headline filter is money: its income threshold is one of the highest in Europe, which keeps the applicant pool smaller.
Income: ~€4,500/month · Insurance: required · Duration: Up to 1 year (Type D long-stay)
⚠️ This is general information, not legal, immigration, tax or insurance advice. Rules change often — always confirm the current requirements with the official government source before you apply.
Income requirement
You need to show roughly €4,500 per month. One of the highest thresholds in Europe — a minimum gross monthly income of €4,500, evidenced over the six months immediately before applying, and it has to be a consistent pattern rather than one strong month. Practitioners suggest clearing it in net terms to be safe. You will still find guides quoting €3,504: that is the older figure, and it is roughly €1,000 too low for a 2026 application.

Health insurance
Health insurance valid in Estonia (and the Schengen area) for the full duration of stay. This is the step that rejects the most applications, so it's worth getting right.

Tax
Long stays can create Estonian tax residency; Estonia's e-Residency is separate and does not grant the right to live there.
How long it lasts
Up to 1 year (Type D long-stay). It is mainly a temporary route rather than a path to permanent residency.
Getting paid and staying connected
Two practical things every nomad sorts out on arrival: a low-fee way to receive income in euros, and mobile data from day one.
